Most of the time during the course of your orthodontic treatment, you will be asked to wear elastics. Elastics can be worn in several different ways to accomplish several different things.

It is essential to wear your elastics for a minimum of 20 hours per day. Elastics put constant force in an area that needs correction--it is impossible for braces to accomplish the specific functions of elastics.

Elastics can be uncomfortable for a few days after you start wearing them. It is so important to KEEP wearing them. After a few days, the soreness will go away but the elastics will keep doing their job. The main mistake that patients make with elastics is to keep taking them out because their teeth are sore. They don't give themselves a chance to get over that initial feeling--which will never happen if the elastics aren't worn. The result is that whatever amount the teeth move just goes back with the elastics out--then the process starts over.

Trust us...the soreness does stop, just keep at it!
